Fans’ excitement is off the charts as we slowly and steadily move towards DC Universe 2.0. Unfortunately, the new era comes at the expense of several O.G. actors, including Henry Cavill and Gal Gadot. While their future with the superhero universe remains uncertain, actor Xolo Maridueña has managed to move past security and make it into the new DCU.
Xolo Maridueña’s retention comes after his DCU debut, Blue Beetle, failed to perform as well as its peers at the box office. In a new interview, the actor appeared confident regarding his superhero role in James Gunn and Peter Safran’s DCU. Xolo Maridueña even ignited the hope of a second Blue Beetle film in the hearts of his fans.
Xolo Maridueña is Confident about His DCU Return
James Gunn and Peter Safran’s revamped superhero universe is all set to begin with Chapter One: Gods and Monsters in late 2024. The animated series Creature Commandos will be the first project to release, followed by the much-awaited Superman: Legacy the following year. Thanks to this, actors like Henry Cavill and Gal Gadot were left behind in order to pave the way for new talent and fresh stories.
As for Xolo Maridueña’s superhero, Blue Beetle, we don’t know when or how he’ll be making a re-entry in the future. What we do know is the man behind the character is super confident about his return, which could also come in the form of a sequel to Blue Beetle (2023), though the chances for that are pretty low.
Talking to ScreenRant at the 2024 Saturn Awards, Maridueña stated,
“I know we’ll see Blue Beetle again, whether it comes in the form of Blue Beetle 2 or wherever. It’s been really great to work alongside James and Peter, who have graciously folded us into their new universe even though it wasn’t part of what they came up with. It’s an honor. Now, where Blue Beetle heads in the future? I don’t know. But I can confidently say that we will see him soon.”
Looking at Maridueña’s confidence, we can not help but think that the Latino superhero is going to have a colorful future with Gunn and Safran’s DCU.
Blue Beetle Failed to Impress at the Box Office
While Maridueña is 50-50 on Blue Beetle getting a sequel, it is worth noting that the film failed to make much impact at the box office. During its entire theatrical run, Angel Manuel Soto’s film managed to bag a meager $130 million at the box office. Since the reported budget for the movie is $125 million, it’s quite clear that Blue Beetle was a box office disappointment.
In fact, Maridueña’s DCU debut turned out to be the lowest-grossing film in the DCEU ever. On the contrary, fans and critics seem to have thoroughly enjoyed Blue Beetle. The film received a score of 78% on Rotten Tomatoes from the critics, and the audience rating came to a total of a whopping 91%. According to one critic, Blue Beetle was full of “Humor and heart.”
Here’s hoping the superhero will be welcomed back with open arms the next time he dons the blue suit, even at the box office.
