Now that your jaws are off the floor and Vogue’s transatlantic Adele takeover has had time to marinade in your mind – New tunes! The truth behind that weight loss! Heartbreak! – it’s time to unpack the fashion. The shoot, styled by Edward Enninful and photographed by Steven Meisel in New York after five years of virtually no press, is an exquisite return to form.
The watchword on the shoot, as Enninful explains in his editor’s letter, was “timeless”, to reflect the powerhouse performer herself. The looks – from the vinyl Louis Vuitton mini dress to the dramatic Dolce & Gabbana corsetry – are, accordingly, fabulous exemplars of hyper glamorous style that goes beyond trends, eras and, for Adele, continents. Except it feels especially right for now.
The cover drops after a show season that saw a true celebration of body positivity and high-octane dressing. It was resolutely sexy, skimpy and slinky but, more importantly, about confidence. Grinning models flicked their hair sassily at the cameras (iconic scenes at Chanel), danced during runway finales (Kate Moss and Shalom Harlow at Fendace), and shared the spotlight with cartoon characters also decked out in ballgowns (Marge and Homer at Balenciaga). Spring/summer 2022 was a month-long party and everyone was invited. Hold tight to your mini skirts; pack your platforms and you’re in!
