Technically speaking, most of the celebrities that attended the 81st Golden Globes were dressed in black: from Rosamund Pike in archival Dior to Hari Nef in Alexandre Vauthier and Dua Lipa in Schiaparelli to Pedro Pascal in an orthopaedic sling and just about every man that wore a – gasp! – suit. But since black is the absence of colour and is therefore not visible on the colour spectrum, it was red that proliferated this evening’s not-quite-red-but-perhaps-burgundy carpet.

Synonymous with with danger and courage and romance and rage – all the things actors pride themselves on having direct access to – red was a dominant characteristic of the spring/summer 2023 collections and permeated a vast proportion of last year’s street celeb-led style moments. See: Kylie Jenner and EmRata and Dua Lipa and Zoe Kravitz’s lone sock and Olivia Rodrigo’s school shoes. And so perhaps it tracks that the first awards ceremony of 2023 should be bathed in that same hue.
Here is a non-exhaustive list of all the famous people that wore some derivative of red at the Golden Globes: Florence Pugh in Valentino, Selena Gomez in Armani Privé and Bulgari jewels, Julianne Moore in Bottega Veneta, Ayo Edebiri in Prada (and Boucheron jewels) and Danielle Brooks in Moschino. But red – being the colour of revolution – looked best on those that went beyond the traditional margins of event-dressing. People like Billie Eilish whose berserk librarian-esque look was punctuated with red hair and red socks, and Barry Keoghan who wore a plaid Louis Vuitton suit replete with a trouser chain that echoed the punkish uniforms designed for the ushers at this year’s Vogue World. “The whole thing is kind of insane, but it’s really beautiful,” said Keoghan’s stylist Ilaria Urbinati. “Rebellious, adventurous and creative”.
