Voters in 33 states will cast ballots to elect one of their two U.S. senators, and voters in Nebraska will vote on both of the Senate seats. Democrats currently hold a narrow majority in the Senate, with 47 Democrats and four independents who have caucused with them. Republicans are trying to win control of the chamber, a switch that would require them to switch only two seats while holding all of their seats. The GOP believes it has an advantage in this election because more vulnerable Democrats are on the ballot, including in Ohio, a conservative state, and Nevada, Pennsylvania and Wisconsin, all swing states. Republicans are also expected to win the contest in West Virginia, where Joe Manchin opted not to run for re-election. A Democrat when elected, Manchin subsequently registered as an independent.
