It is all happening in Cancun as one minute you have Iga Swiatek saying she didn’t want to wear white at the WTA Finals gala because “we’re not getting married or something” and the next minute you have Coco Gauff revealing that she received a marriage proposal.
The fun in Mexico started on Friday during at the WTA Finals draw ceremony when four-time Grand Slam winner Swiatek was the only player to wear red during the traditional pre-tournament photo shoot.
In stark contrast to the Pole’s striking red attire, the other seven participants – world No 1 Aryna Sabalenka, Coco Gauff, Jessica Pegula, Elena Rybakina, Marketa Vondrousova, Ons Jabeur and Maria Sakkari – all wore white outfits.
It led to the usual social media discussions about Swiatek being the odd one out, but the world No 2 revealed on Monday why she didn’t want to wear white.

After beating Marketa Vondrousova in her first round-robin match, Swiatek told Tennis Channel: “Honestly, there was no story. I picked the dress a couple of months before and then WTA emailed us that we should all wear white and we were like ‘Really? We’re not getting married or something’.
“So we asked them if it’s possible to not have that rule and they literally sent an email a couple of hours later saying, ‘It’s okay you can kind of wear whatever you want’.
“I think most of the girls, maybe they thought the rule is still on or something but I’m not sure. I think it was a full coincidence because the day before we asked, I didn’t talk to the girls, but we asked like overall what they’re going to wear and they told us four girls are going to wear white so I didn’t know I’m going to be the only one, honestly.
“I didn’t want to make a big fuss about my dress, but I am happy that I picked this one. It is from a Polish fashion designer (Magda Butrym) and I loved it from the beginning, from the first time I saw it. It is also a little bit of a Mexican vibe with the red. I think it was a nice choice. It was the first time that I wore something that was so slim.”
And in case you missed it, US Open champion Coco Gauff revealed after her victory over Ons Jabeur that she received a marriage proposal in Cancun.
