Drake State Seeking Community Input To Help Bridge Digital Divide In North Alabama

Drake State Community & Technical College has initiated a new survey to assess broadband availability and digital access in Madison, Marshall, and Jackson Counties.

This effort is part of a broader mission to address the digital needs of high-poverty and rural communities, ensuring equitable access to the digital tools necessary for success.

As a central institution in the region, Drake State is taking strategic steps to capitalize on federal funding for expanding internet services in underserved areas. The survey aims to gather key data that will guide future initiatives and help attract more resources to support these efforts.

“Access to high-speed internet is vital for participation in today’s digital economy,” said Dr. Patricia Sims, President of Drake State. “Our workforce training and adult education programs are life-changing, but we recognize that many in our community are missing out on these opportunities due to limited digital access. We are dedicated to ensuring residents of Madison, Marshall, and Jackson Counties can benefit from the expanding opportunities in our region.”

The college’s initiative is focused on addressing the digital divide by supporting K-12 schools, public housing, and other key stakeholders in the community. Drake State is urging residents to take part in the survey, as the information collected will shape future broadband infrastructure projects.

“This effort aligns with national goals to improve broadband access in underserved regions,” Dr. Sims added. “The survey results will be crucial in helping us expand digital resources and create new pathways to education and career growth for everyone in the area.”

The survey, which takes about five minutes to complete, is a core element of Drake State’s strategy to improve digital connectivity across North Alabama. Residents are encouraged to participate to help ensure their communities are well-represented in future plans.
