Forget global press tours and multiple promo appearances, the best way a Hollywood actor can promote an upcoming new film is through their fashion. From Margot Robbie to Zendaya, we’ve seen method dressing take red carpets by storm over the past two years. But more recently, Cynthia Erivo and Ariana Grande have been committing to the bit in the lead-up to the release of their movie musical Wicked, finally out in less than a month.
The leading ladies have ensured to rep their characters’ signature colours – Glinda’s preferred pink and Elphaba’s trademark green (obvs) – for both the 2024 Oscars and CinemaCon. Even when attending events separately, both Ariana and Cynthia have routinely incorporated subtle nods to their alter-egos into their looks. We’re talking pouffy pink dresses at the Olympics and on SNL for Ariana, while Cynthia’s black hooded Zac Posen for Gap gown at the CFDA Awards last night had a witchy vibe.
The British actress’ appearance followed an earlier stop at a Special Cast and Filmmakers Screening of Wicked where she appeared alongside her co-star. And, staying true to form, Cynthia and Ariana *again* cosplayed as their characters IRL.
Rather than an obvious take on the green theme, Cynthia opted for a casual cool ensemble of a green patterned tailored coat worn over a white t-shirt, blue straight-leg jeans and green satin heeled pumps.
Ariana, meanwhile, donned an ivory Versace skirt suit consisting of an asymmetric waistcoat featuring exposed seaming detail paired with a voluminous A-line midi skirt. White opera gloves, coordinating court shoes and pearl stud earrings completed the look. Despite ditching Glinda’s favourite colourway, the tailored two-piece was still very on-brand for the Good Witch of Oz.
The fact Kristin Chenoweth – AKA the original Glinda in the Broadway production of Wicked – also attended the screening practically twinning with Ariana in an all-white ensemble is proof of the matter. Yep, our excitement has reached fever pitch!
