Was it two years ago that Coastal Grandmother was popular? Last year quiet luxury? Well this year it’s called Country Club Chic. In my opinion, they’re all pretty much the same – a look that is effortless, chic, and current. It combines preppy elements and a little Palm Royale along with the pickle ball sensation that has swept the nation. Want to look like you just stepped off the court and you are now ready for lunch at the club? Then this aesthetic is for you!
Country Club Chic
When I think of Country Club Chic I think of a sweater casually draped over the shoulders, I think of a tennis dress, oxford shirts, collared shirts, a classic shoe, linen, and of course Lilly Pulitzer. That’s quite the list, isn’t it? Frankly, I like all of these elements. I was very excited when Palm Royale aired but soon realized I liked the fashion not the story line. Kristen Wiig looked fabulous and I could hardly wait to see what she was wearing.
The elements of this aesthetic aren’t necessarily trendy so start by looking on your closet for some of these key pieces. If you think you want to update your wardrobe then rest assured that these pieces are available at just about every retailer and price point!
Country Club Chic – Key Ingredients
One of the easiest ways to achieve this look is to drape a lightweight sweater over your shoulders. If it’s too hot you could try the sweater – shawl I shared a few weeks ago. It’s genius and so easy to wear, takes decisions about how to tie, where to tie, etc. out of the equation. I find that most of the time when I’d wear a sweater draped over my shoulders I never actually planned on wearing it as a sweater anyway!
Trousers or tailored shorts are taking the place of the oversized everything we’ve seen in years past. Clean lines and a good fit will take you far. Maybe you have a great pair of chinos from a few years back? They never go out of style.
Don’t forget a good linen blazer with your shorts. The addition of it elevates the casual short without making it too dressy.
Collared shirts, rugby stripes, and oxford shirts are yet another easy way to pull of Country Club Chic! Personally I love the linen blend polo style shirts from Banana Republic Factory. I wear them in place of a t-shirt for an elevated casual look. Another favorite is my open weave polo sweater from Loft. It comes in black and white. Thanks to the open knit, I can wear it now and in the fall.
Oxford style shirts are classic but we’re even seeing some dresses that mimic the style. Tuckernuck is the destination for all the best dresses and the prices reflect that. For a more affordable option, check out this dress from multiple sellers on Amazon – buyer beware though. The stock photos look the same but the prices are not. Here’s what I found: the cheaper versions are 100% polyester or one is made of flax while the higher priced versions are linen, linen blend, or cotton.
I really love this chic dress from Banana Republic Factory. I didn’t buy it but I have not been able to stop thinking about it (you know what that means). The fabric was so luxe and the fit so chic.
Palm Royale reignited my love of Lilly Pulitzer. So much so, my husband bought me a dress and romper for my birthday (I shared that last week). I had so much fun trying on dresses at the store, have you ever stepped foot inside a Lilly? I’m not sure there’s a store more beautiful. if Lilly is beyond your budget, you can shop Poshmark, Ebay, or even WhatNot and score some major deals. That’s the nice thing about classic brands – they are timeless!
Ready to Try Country Club Chic?
If this is the kind of style you prefer and you are ready to give it a try go through your closet. You probably already have some of these pieces. It might just be the odd edition of a piece here or there that pulls the look together. If you do need new things but you’re looking for budget friendly options, choose solids over prints and neutrals when it comes to color. They’ll instantly look more expensive!
Let me know what you think of Country Club Chic! Regardless of what it’s called, I like the style, how about you?
