Ariana Grande is shutting down any negative comments or hate directed at people in her life after releasing her album, Eternal Sunshine.
The musician and actor took to Instagram Stories on Saturday to firmly tell fans to not send any “hateful messages” to people that fans think the songs may be about. Grande did not specify who exactly was receiving those messages.
“hi i just wanted to say anyone that is sending hateful messages to the people in my life based on your interpretation of this album is not supporting me and is absolutely doing the polar opposite of what i would ever encourage,” Grande wrote, adding that fans who do so are “misinterpreting the intention behind the music.”
“i ask that you please do not,” she continued. “it is not how to support me. it is the opposite. although the album captures a lot of painful moments, it is also woven together with a through line of deep, sincere love. if you cannot hear that, please listen more closely.”
While it’s not completely clear who this Instagram Story is about, Ariana Grande’s relationships have been front and center over the years, but more particularly in the last several months. Grande and ex-husband Dalton Gomez finalized their divorce in October 2023 after reportedly separating around February, according to court documents. The pair’s two-year marriage ended while Grande was working and living in the U.K. filming Wicked.
At the time of her divorce, rumors started swirling that Grande was dating her Wicked co-star, Ethan Slater — who filed for divorce from his wife around the same time as Grande’s own marriage dissolved. Since then, Slater and Grande have been spotted in public together, seemingly confirming their relationship with dinner dates and Grande supporting her new man as he performs on Broadway.
In Grande’s album Eternal Sunshine, it seems like she may be singing about her marriage ending in multiple songs, including “bye” and “we can’t be friends,” among others. Grande and Slater received backlash for their new relationship after his ex-wife Lily Jay told Page Six that Grande is “not a girl’s girl” and that “My family is just collateral damage.” Slater and Jay share a one-year-old baby together.
