Drake Guhn could have objected when he lost a preseason quarterback competition.
This is Guhn’s senior season for Clyde, so it would have been easy to harbor resentment or let his frustration distract him from his effort and commitment. Instead, Guhn tossed three touchdown passes in his first varsity start in a 34-13 victory over Port Clinton after Brennan Wilson was injured last week.
“I’m super proud of that kid,” Clyde coach Ryan Carter said. “We had a competition through camp. You never heard anything out of Drake. ‘I’m going to do what I can for the team, wherever you need me.”
Initially, that meant Guhn would start at linebacker. He’d provide depth as a running back.
He helped ignite the offense with three touchdown passes Friday to start the scoring. Mason Flewelling caught a 26-yard touchdown pass, followed by 20- and 4-yard scoring receptions for Kam Shortridge.
“He ran the offense well,” Carter said. “We ran effectively. It’s hard for a backup to come in and run the offense without those reps. We got a win on the road.”

Guhn’s passing complemented Clyde’s rush offense, which had 216 yards on 50 carries. Guhn, cousin of Clyde grad Matt Guhn, completed 10 of 16 passes for 88 yards without an interception.
He has 56 yards and one touchdown on 17 carries.
“Go in and perform and do the best I can,” he said. “Keep everybody up, stay positive. Do your own job. Do it the best you can.”
Carter says that all the time.
“Nobody try to do everybody else’s job, that’s when it gets all messed up,” Guhn said.
Guhn completed 6 of 16 passes in opportunities the first four weeks. His teammates were ready to rally behind him, especially after recognizing his loyalty to the team.
“Drake never said a word, not even under his breath,” Shortridge said. “Otherwise it would have been harder. That’s a senior and a junior, he never said a word. He waited patiently. Drake stepped up big.
“The biggest part of winning was Drake. He’s not a captain but he’s a leader. He never got down, he didn’t lose trust.”
High school football Week 5 roundup
He and Wilson remained close throughout their competition. Wilson obviously wants Guhn to succeed and Guhn wants Wilson to heal quickly.
“We push each other,” Guhn said. “We stay friends and we push to be the best we can be.”
It won’t be easy for Wilson to get his job back, except on defense.
