John Amos’ daughter, Shannon Amos, said she found out about her father’s death “through the media” like the rest of the world.
“I am without words…Our family has received the heartbreaking news that my Dad, John Allen Amos, Jr., transitioned on August 21st,” she wrote on Instagram alongside a touching video of her dancing with the “Good Times” actor.
“We are devastated and left with many questions about how this happened 45 days ago, learning about it through the media like so many of you,” she added.
Shannon said that though this should be a time “of honoring and celebrating” John’s life, she is “struggling to navigate the wave of emotions and uncertainties” surrounding his passing.
“Still, there is some semblance of peace in knowing my father is finally free. My family and I deeply appreciate the outpouring of love, calls, and texts. Please continue to hold our family in your thoughts and prayers. Thank you,” she concluded.
On Monday, John’s son, Kelly Christopher Amos, announced in a statement that his father died on Aug. 21 from natural causes. He was 84.
“It is with heartfelt sadness that I share with you that my father has transitioned,” Kelly said in a statement.
“He was a man with the kindest heart and a heart of gold … and he was loved the world over. Many fans consider him their TV father. He lived a good life. His legacy will live on in his outstanding works in television and film as an actor.”
Kelly said his dad “loved working as an actor throughout his entire life … most recently in ‘Suits LA’ playing himself and our documentary about his life journey as an actor, ‘America’s Dad.’”
He concluded, “He was my dad, my best friend, and my hero. Thank you for your prayers and support at this time.”
The drama between Kelly and Shannon — whom John shared with his first ex-wife, Noel Mickelson — has been unraveling in the public eye since 2023.
According to the Hollywood Reporter, the siblings publicly fought last year over the “Coming to America” star’s care and his legacy.
Shannon publicly accused her brother of elder abuse, which Kelly denied.
The film producer told the outlet that she “supplied extensive documentation to law enforcement agencies in Colorado and New Jersey to investigate her claims” of Kelly’s elder abuse.
She claimed that, over time, her brother “consolidated authority over their father and his affairs,” as well as isolating him from members of his inner circle.
Shannon accused Kelly of disregarding John’s medical needs, mishandling his finances, impersonating him in communications and exploiting and destroying his legacy.
Kelly has denied all of his sister’s claims. It’s unclear why she wasn’t notified about John’s death.
Page Six has reached out to Kelly for comment but did not immediately hear back.
